How We Built This
Mercury News implements a dual-store architecture that separates content storage from relationship mapping—enabling both fast queries and deep graph analysis.
PostgreSQL stores articles, entities, and topics with full-text search and JSON metadata. Neo4j maintains the knowledge graph: which entities mention which articles, topic hierarchies, and relationship strengths.
tRPC provides end-to-end type safety between Next.js frontend and the data layer. D3.js renders interactive force-directed graphs for visual exploration.
The crisis dashboard adds TimescaleDB for time-series event data and Mapbox GL for tactical visualization— bridging news intelligence with real-time situational awareness.
